Soft Resetting Guide for VGC 2016

Hello Hat Lovers!

I’ve created a guide to help players soft reset for perfect legendaries in the most efficient way possible.

Basics

No matter which Pokemon you’re trying to catch be sure to do the following:

  • Turn off move animation.
  • Turn off the Exp. Share and use a Pokemon that won’t level up from catching the legendary.
  • Put your Master Ball (or whatever ball you want to catch your target with, you psycho) in the first slot of your bag.
  • Register the Pokemon in your Pokedex before you catch it so you don’t need to watch the pokedex screen bit every time.

You’ll want a Pokemon that can gauge the target’s speed. Leading with a Pokemon whose speed is one point lower than your ideal target (or one point higher if going for minimal speed) is ideal. Most of the legendaries have an ability that triggers a message at the start of battle like Pressure, so using your own lets you check their speed without even attacking. Try using Intimidate, Pressure, or a weather ability.

You can take this a step further by using a move like Seismic Toss or Night Shade from a Pokemon that will bring your ideal target into the yellow HP bar only if their HP is perfect. Another idea is to use a Final Gambit Pokemon that can KO the target unless they’re perfect. Staraptor is a great Pokemon for some legendaries, as it can be EV’d to outspeed, check the speed with Intimidate, and then use Final Gambit to verify HP.

But you could just throw a Master Ball after the speed check…

Groudon / Kyogre

Groudon and Kyogre can be caught in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, respectively. The most efficient way to soft reset for them is to knock them out in when you encounter them during the story and come back later after beating the Elite 4. This way you won’t need to watch a cutscene after catching them. Unfortunately, you have to watch the initial cutscene when you try to catch them every time.

I highly recommend using a Synchronizer that is one point slower than a Groudon / Kyogre with a 31 speed IV (or one-two points higher than a 0 speed IV if going for Brave / Quiet). Here are the stats you should strive for:

600px-383GroudonGroudon:
158 HP
138 / 153 / 168 Attack
130 / 144 / 158 Defence
97 / 108 / 118 Special Attack
89 / 99 / 108 Special Defence
77 / 99/ 108 Speed

600px-382KyogreKyogre:
158 HP
97 / 108 / 118 Attack
89 / 99 / 108 Defence
138 / 153 / 168 Special Attack
130 / 144 / 158 Special Defence
77 / 99/ 108 Speed

Hyphenated stats are referring to differences due to nature. The first stat is a 31 IV with a negative nature (expect for speed which is 0), the second stat is for neutral natures and the third stat is for positive natures.

Rayquaza

Rayquaza can be encountered during the Delta Episode of Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. You are required to catch Rayquaza in order to advance through the story so you likely need a second copy of the game to soft reset on. To save time go into the encounter with 5 Pokemon in your party so you won’t have to select one to deposit after catching Rayquaza. Your first chance to check Rayquaza’s stats is during the battle with Zinnia. These are the stats you should aim for:

600px-384Rayquaza248 HP
212 / 236 / 259 Attack
136 / 152 / 167 Defence
212 / 236 / 259 Special Attack
136 / 152 /167  Special Defence
144 / 159 / 174 Speed

There was an event Rayquaza released during the summer. This Rayquaza is much easier to reset for as you just need to talk to the delivery woman in any Pokemon Center. This Rayquaza is always Shiny, and while you can’t use Synchronize with it you don’t need to watch any cutscenes while soft-reseting for it or even have to go through the motions of catching it. Sadly, this event is now over and if you didn’t get it when it was out and hold off on picking it up like I did then you’re out of luck.

Xerneas / Yveltal

Xerneas and Yveltal are caught in Pokemon X & Y at Team Flare’s secret base. Like with Rayquaza I recommend going in with an open party space. If you KO Xerneas/Yveltal they’ll appear again immediately and you can battle them again without watching the cutscene. After catching Xerneas/Yveltal you are challenged by Lysandre. During this battle you can check the stats you got and only need to complete the battle if you get one you like. Both legendaries have the same base stats so you’ll be aiming for the same stats with each of them:

600px-716Xerneas600px-717Yveltal201 HP
135 / 151 / 166 Attack
103 / 115 / 126 Defence
135 / 151 / 166 Special Attack
106 / 118 / 129 Special Defence
108 / 119 / 130 Speed

Pro-tip: Have Lysandre knock out Xerneas/Yveltal to prevent them from gaining any experience from the battle.

Mewtwo

Mewtwo is caught in Pokemon X and Y in the unknown dungeon. There are no long story related cutscenes from here on out. Mewtwo has the Pressure Ability which makes it easier to check its Speed without wasting a turn in battle. Here are the stats you should aim for:

Mewtwo
600px-150Mewtwo250 HP
162 / 180 / 198 Attack
136 / 152 / 167 Defence
217 / 242 / 266 Special Attack
136/ 152 / 167 Special Defence
168 / 208 / 228 Speed

Lugia / Ho-Oh

To catch Lugia or Ho-Oh you’ll need to find the scanner in Sea Mauville. Deliver the scanner to Captain Stern to obtain the Clear Bell in Omega Ruby or the Tidal Bell in Alpha Sapphire. Back in Sea Mauville you can encounter Ho-Oh or Lugia with these items. Both legendaries have Pressure to help check their speeds. Here are the stats to shoot for:

600px-249LugiaLugia
181 HP
99 / 110 / 121 Attack
135 / 150 / 165 Defence
99 / 110 / 121 Special Attack
157 / 174 / 191 Special Defence
117 / 130 / 143 Speed

600px-250Ho-OhHo-Oh
175 HP
135 / 150 / 165 Attack
99 / 110 / 121 Defence
117 /130 / 143 Special Attack
157 / 174 / 191 Special Defence
99 / 110 / 121 Speed

Dialga / Palkia

Dialga and Palkia are found in a rift near Dewford town while soaring in the sky. You need Azelf, Uxie and Mespirit in your party in order to encounter them. I recommend saving your game in Dewford and setting the Eon Flute as your only registered Key Item. Both of these legendaries have Pressure so you can use your own abilities to check their speed. Here are the stats you should look for:

600px-483DialgaDialga
175 HP
126 / 140 / 154 Attack
126 / 140 / 154 Defence
153 / 170 / 187 Special Attack
108 / 120 / 132 Special Defence
85 / 110 / 121 Speed

108 / 120 / 132 Defence
153 / 170 / 187 Special Attack
126 / 140 / 154 Special Defence
108 / 120 / 132 Speed

Giratina

Giratina can be encountered in the same area as Dialga/Palkia if you have both of them in your party. Giratina will appear in its altered form and has Pressure in this form.

600px-487Giratina-AlteredGiratina
225 HP
108 / 120 / 132 Attack
126 /140 / 154 Defence
108 / 120 / 132 Special Attack
126 /140 / 154 Special Defence
99 / 110 / 121 Speed

Zekrom / Reshiram

Zekrom and Reshiram are found in Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby, respectively. They are found in the Fabled Cave near Mauville City while soaring with a level 100 Pokemon in your party. Their Abilities also trigger a message at the start of the battle. Here are their stats:

600px-644ZekromZekrom
175 HP
153 / 170 / 187 Attack
126 /140 / 154 Defence
126 / 140 Special Attack
108 / 120 / 132 Special Defence
99 / 110 / 121 Speed

600px-643ReshiramReshiram
175 HP
126 /140 / 154 Attack
108 / 120 / 132 Defence
153 / 170 / 187 Special Attack
126 /140 / 154 Special Defence
99 / 110 / 121 Speed

Kyurem

Kyurem requires Zekrom and Reshiram to find. Kyurem is located in the Gnarled Den near Fallarbor while soaring in the sky. Like most legendaries Kyurem has Pressure to help with speed checking. Here are Kyurem’s stats:

600px-646KyuremKyurem
200 HP
135 / 150 / 165 Attack
99 / 110 / 121 Defence
135 / 150 / 165 Special Attack
99 / 110 / 121 Special Defence
104 / 115 / 126 Speed

If you’re planning to use Black or White Kyurem then you need to fuse Kyurem with Zekrom or Reshiram. Kyurem’s IVs and nature will be the ones used while the Zekrom / Reshiram don’t even need to have a Pentagon.

Zygarde

718ZygardeZygarde is found in Pokemon X and Y in the depths of Terminus Cave. Like many other legendaries it has an ability that triggers upon entry into battle, giving you an easy way to check its speed. I don’t think Zygarde is good enough to even bother posting its stats, look them up if you want this thing
